How did your interest in wildlife arise?
I was born in Pollachi in India, a place known for its greenery. Way too many movies have been picturized here. I spent my student life in the Nilgiris which too is a beautiful area. Having lived in the Western Ghats with greenery and wildlife around, it was only natural that I grew with interest in nature and wildlife.
How do you describe your journey as a photographer and a person?
To an extent there is a social stigma around women photographers. It was difficult in the beginning with men dominating the field. It was difficult for me to be accepted. It took some time to be accepted and now I am happy to be associated and accepted. Also, support from my family helped me to reach where I am today.
What is your view on Wildlife Conservation? How can we, as wildlife photographers, help to protect our Mother Nature?
Wildlife Conservation is something which every single person has to be aware of. It is we human beings who have led to this state. Our greed has led to their loss of habitat and still we continue our wrong deeds. As photographers, we try to make them appreciate the beauty of nature.
Can you give our readers the best wildlife photography tips?
Wildlife photogrophy revolves around many ‘rights’
* right equipment (what lens to use for the situation)
* right settings (no auto but getting your settings right)
* right place at the right time (knowledge on where to visit and when)
* right knowledge about the subject (it is a wild animal and you need to know about the subject to get the shot you like)
* More importantly Wild is their ‘right’ of way and we should not disturb them in anyway
What plans do you have in the future related to Wildlife Photography?
Miles to go before I sleep. This is a big ocean and each expedition teaches newer and newer things. The best thing I intend to do in the future is to get more youngsters in the field. It is these youngsters who can create an impact.
Tell us something about the gears you use and how it helped in your photographic journey?
Currently I use Canon Mark III and Canon 7D Mark II bodies. On the lens front, I have an array of lenses but the most used in wildlife are the Canon 500mm lens, Canon 70-200 lens and Canon 100-400 Mark II lens. As you evolve from one stage to another in your wildlife journey, it becomes important that you evolve equally in terms of your equipement. The right choice of equipment for the situation goes a
long way.
