Sustainable harvesting – the glorified name attributed to government-sanctioned hunting, is a practice that is hard to justify, but is still being practiced. And, this is not against some animals that are thought of as ‘vermin’, but on charismatic and keystone species like the wolves and the Grizzly bear. The Grizzly is the second largest terrestrial carnivore and a gigantic and imposing beast. But for all their mightiness, it is depressing what the tiny humans have done to them. In North America where once Grizzlies were common, we have reduced them to a small percentage and restricted them to pockets.
In this edition of PT Aware, join Dr. Peter Hudson and learn about the plight of the Grizzlies. Serous Grizzly recovery programs undertaken were fairly successful, but alas the moment the population attains “carrying capacity” there is invariably a rush to delist them, lest the guns catch rust!
Read why the concept of “carrying capacity” is less understood, and in reality, we have a very limited idea of what is an ideal carrying capacity.
This sanctioned hunting is in addition to the losses to the population caused by other human incursions into the animal’s habitat.
A look at the marvelous photographs in this article will make you wonder at the majesty of these creatures, and we have been persecuting them for centuries. Well, it is definitely time to stop the killing!
Thanks to Peter Hudson, once again for the marvelous photographs in this article. We are sure your images will inspire love, and respect for these marvelous creatures and generate more advocates for their protection.
Our next edition will focus on the “Black-backed jackal”. Please be ready to upload your “Black-backed jackal” images..
