Perhaps one of the most distinctive-looking and easily recognized animals on the planet, the Zebra is synonymous with stripes inspiring names like the Zebra crossing.

It is fascinating to know that the pattern of the stripes is unique to each individual, much like a human fingerprint. There are many stories and theories behind the evolution of these stripes.

Zebras are very important in the ecology of Africa, being abundant prey for big cats. Even the Nile crocodile has developed a taste for the Zebra. Zebras belong to the same family as horses and asses, but they have never been truly domesticated. There are three sub-species of the Zebra existing today, and they can be found in eastern and southern Africa.
